- Margaret Curran MP signs up to FSB Real Life Entrepreneur campaign

Glasgow’s small businesses got an early Christmas present yesterday when Margaret Curran MP signed up as a Federation of Small Businesses’ (FSB) Real Life Entrepreneur champion at a local firm.

The Glasgow East MP promised to celebrate and support her local small business community at McPhies Craft Bakers on the city’s Shettleston Road with Martin Little, the chairman of the FSB’s Glasgow branch. The business owners, Jim and Craig McPhie, were on hand to provide festive snacks to all in attendance.

The FSB’s campaign is designed to encourage all sorts of aspiring Scottish entrepreneurs to take the plunge while giving some encouragement and advice to those that already have.

Margaret Curran MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, said:

“I am delighted to sign up to the FSB Real Life Entrepreneur Campaign. In these tough economic times it is critical that we as politicians lend as much support as we can to small businesses. I am especially proud to be signing up to the campaign in McPhies Bakery within my constituency.”

Martin Little, FSB Glasgow branch chair who also runs a Glasgow local telecoms business, said:

“Setting up and running a business can be a daunting prospect, and it is a lot of hard work. But it is also one of the most rewarding things that you can do and can be one of the most positive changes someone can make for themselves and the community they live in.

“We’re delighted that we have such a prominent and successful politician as Margaret supporting the campaign.

“The jobs and growth which small businesses will create in Glasgow in 2012 and beyond are going to be more vital than ever to drive our economic recovery.”

Craig McPhie, co-owner McPhies Master Bakers, said:

“I know how much work our business has been over the years

“I also understand what a difference the business has made to my own life and to the lives of our employees and local community. I’m proud to support the FSB’s Real Life Entrepreneur campaign and I’m delighted Margaret his given it her support.”

McPhies Master Bakers have been part of the city since 1973 and are well-known for playing an important role in Glasgow’s East End community. The baker, which employs 20 people, regularly takes on local apprentices and the owners, Jim Mcphie and Criag McPhie regularly give talks to local schools on the importance of business in the community.
